Privacy Policy

Webster's 1828 Dictionary ("the App") is an offline dictionary. The entire dictionary lives on your device — searching for words, reading definitions, and browsing never requires an internet connection and never contacts a server. This Privacy Policy explains what happens in the few cases where the App does communicate with our server.

What the App Sends to Our Server

The App contacts our server in the following situations:

• AI Example Sentences (Premium Feature): When you tap "Generate" to create an example sentence, the dictionary word is sent to our server, which forwards it to Anthropic's AI to write the sentence. The word is not permanently stored.
• Subscription Verification: When verifying your subscription, Apple purchase details (transaction ID, product ID, and dates) are sent to our server to confirm your subscription is valid.
• Usage Analytics: The App sends anonymous usage data to our server, including which screens you visit, which features you use, session duration, and basic device information (device model, OS version, locale, and timezone). This data is linked only to your anonymous device ID and is used to improve the App.
• Security Monitoring: The App sends security-related events to our server, such as SSL certificate validation results and device attestation status. These help us protect the App and detect tampering.

What Stays on Your Device

Everything else stays on your device and is never sent anywhere:

• The entire dictionary database
• Your search history
• Your theme and appearance preferences
• A random, anonymous device ID used to manage your subscription, track usage limits, and associate analytics — this ID cannot be used to identify you personally

What We Do Not Collect

• Personal information (name, email, address)
• Location data
• Contacts or photos
• Browsing history outside the App

No account creation or sign-up is required to use the App.

Data Storage and Security

Any data sent between the App and our server is encrypted so it cannot be read by anyone else. IP addresses may be recorded in standard server logs. Words sent for AI example generation are not permanently stored on our server. Analytics and security event data is retained on our server for up to 30 days.

Children's Privacy

The App does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. The App is an educational tool suitable for all ages.
